- Astro Games Room
- Souls of the demon
- Destroy all the stars
- Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
- Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales Ultimate Edition
- Sackboy: a great adventure
At first glance, six first-party launch titles seem comparable to the PS4, which had seven first-party games at launch. But, like the PS4 launch library, many of these titles aren’t true next-gen exclusives. Let’s break it down further.
Astro’s game room doesn’t deserve much discussion, as you’ll get the game preinstalled on your PS5. No matter how good the game is, you won’t have to choose whether to buy it or not.
Demon’s Souls is a remastered PS3 game. Based on the trailer we saw, the game feels like a pretty deep overhaul, with slightly different design and level combat. Even if you wanted to go back and play this game on the PS3, you can’t get the full experience because the online servers were shut down years ago. Still, Demon’s Souls is an 11-year-old game, which many people have played before, and the PS5 version seems to want to deliver a similar experience overall.
It almost feels like cheating to count Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales Ultimate Edition as two separate games. The first is a standalone expansion for Spider-Man on PS4, starring Miles Morales in an all-new, but likely a little smaller, open-world adventure. The latter is a remastered version of Spider-Man on PS4, as well as Miles Morales content.
Spider-Man was a fantastic game, and Miles Morales looks just as good so far. But neither of the two games is a PS5 exclusive. You can get Spider-Man on PS4 right now, and Miles Morales will be released on PS4 as well as PS5. Granted, the game will look and likely run better on the PS5, although it’s hard to imagine that this boost alone is worth $ 400 to $ 500.
Destruction All Stars and Sackboy: A Big Adventure are the only true first-party PS5 exclusives in the launch library, and honestly, we don’t know much about either game yet. They may be sellers of gender-defining systems; It’s also possible that these are the kind of launch titles no one remembers by the time the PS6 launches. Considering LittleBigPlanet’s previous success, I’d put some money on Sackboy by being a good time, but there’s no way to gauge how Destruction All Stars might turn out.
The PS5 launch lineup so far
Granted, the PS5 will have plenty of other titles available at launch, including Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Fortnite, Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition, and Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. But right now, there isn’t a full list of third-party launch titles available, and the full lineup may not fall into place for a month or two.
Since you’ll be able to play these games on an Xbox One, PS4, or PC, it’s hard to recommend a brand new system to them. We expect them to perform better on a PS5, but until we get the system in our hands, we can’t say how significant the performance improvement could be.
Either way, if your decision is made, good luck in trying to pre-order a PS5. It’s a bit chaotic right now, but hopefully the process gets a bit easier in the days and weeks to come. Otherwise, it doesn’t look like you absolutely need to play Day One – provided you already own a PS4.
