Prince Harry’s nationality could be “an issue” as he moves to the United States, royal author Angela Levin has said. The commentator wrote on Twitter: “Harry is still English.
In the past few months, the family of three has bought their first home in Montecito, Santa Barbara, and signed a multi-million dollar deal with the streaming platform Netflix.
But, like anyone else who moves to the United States, Prince Harry will eventually have to choose in what capacity he will stay in the country.
The royal source told The Times in April: “The Duke has not applied for dual citizenship and I don’t think he will apply for a green card at any time. ”
Being a green card holder would automatically make Prince Harry in the eyes of local regulators an American person for tax purposes.
A third route Prince Harry might decide to take would be applying for an O-1 permit, usually granted to “people with extraordinary abilities or achievements” in a specific industry.
This visa would require Prince Harry to identify an area in which he is good at and be sponsored by an organization that wishes to work with him.
Parisa Karaahmet, partner at immigration law firm Fragomen, told Town & Country magazine: “It is quite common for individuals to apply for an O-1 rating if they can show they are achieving. a very high level of success in their field.
“The downside to the O-1 is that it has to be renewed periodically and it forces him to continue this relationship with this organization. ”
Many royal watchers believe Prince Harry will opt for this option.
Twitter user Jeanna said, “Some kind of special ‘O0 visa where the person has great prospects if they are allowed to work / live in the US.
“The O-1 nonimmigrant visa is for the person who possesses extraordinary abilities in science, the arts, education, business or athletics, or who has demonstrated extraordinary achievement in the film industry. or television and which has been recognized nationally. .. ”
Likewise, social media user CK wrote on Twitter: “He can get an O-1 visa which allows him to live and work here for 3 years. ”
Prince Harry and Meghan announced their deal with Netflix earlier this week.
The couple have remained tight-lipped on the details of their new partnership with the streaming platform.
However, experts estimate that the deal is for several million and will last for several years.
Prince Harry is not the first British royal to have lived in the United States.
Before getting married, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie had lived and worked abroad.
