Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have launched a production company, which will be based at Netflix. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have signed a multi-year deal with the streaming giant for scripted series, docu-series, documentaries, feature films and children’s programming, Deadline has confirmed. There are already several projects in development under the deal, including an innovative nature documentary series and an animated series that celebrates inspiring women. Both will appear in documentaries. Markle has no plans to return to acting, after his last appearance on the USA Network drama Costume, who finished his race in 2019.

Prince Harry and Markle have met with a number of mainstream media and banner companies over the past few weeks over a mega-deal, which some sources say could be worth as much as $ 150 million. The goal of the duo, who moved to California earlier this year, is to showcase diverse voices in front of and behind the camera. They commit to adopting a variety of hiring practices for the key positions that they actively fill in their production company.

By launching a business and signing a big deal with Netflix after leaving royal life, Prince Harry and Markle reflect the decision President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama made after leaving the White House.

“Harry and Meghan have inspired millions of people around the world with their authenticity, optimism and leadership,” said Ted Sarandos, Co-CEO and Chief Content Officer of Netflix. “We are incredibly proud that they chose Netflix as their creative home – and are excited to tell stories with them that can help build resilience and increase understanding for audiences everywhere.

Most recently, The Duke worked closely with the directors of the documentary Phoenix in resurrection, in which it also appears. The documentary premiered last week on Netflix.

“Our lives, both independent of each other and as a couple, have enabled us to understand the power of the human spirit: courage, resilience and the need for connection,” said the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in a statement. “Through our work with diverse communities and their environments, to shed light on people and causes around the world, we will focus on creating content that informs but also gives hope. As new parents, creating inspiring family programs is important to us too, as is powerful storytelling through a truthful and relatable lens. We’re excited to be working with Ted and the team at Netflix whose unprecedented reach will help us share impactful content that drives the action ”.

The deal was first reported by The New York Times.
