The FBI is investigating the sighting of two pilots on separate flights near Los Angeles International Airport on Sunday.
Several US media obtained a recording of communications between the pilots and air traffic control, which revealed the details of the incident.
In the recording, a pilot says, “Tower, American 1997. We just passed a guy in a jet pack. ”
The controller replies, “America 1997, okay – were they to your left or to your right? ”
The pilot said, “On the left side, maybe 300 meters or so, about our altitude. ”
Seconds later, another pilot tells the tower, “We just saw the guy walk past us in a jet pack. ”
The controller then urged the pilot of a JetBlue flight to “exercise caution,” adding: “A person in a jet pack reported 300 meters south of the Los Angeles final at about 3,000 feet. ”
An unidentified person then said, “Only in Los Angeles. ”
The US aviation regulator, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), confirmed the sighting.
In a statement to NBC News, he said: “Two airline flight crews reported seeing what appeared to be someone in a jet pack as they were on their final approaches to LAX around 6:35 pm ( local hour). [on] Sunday.
“The FAA has alerted local law enforcement to the reports, and is reviewing those reports. ”
The FBI’s Los Angeles field office also confirmed it was aware of the sighting and is investigating, NBC News reported.
