Online supermarket Picnic plans to expand into France and Britain and has partnered with Germany’s largest supermarket group Edeka to do so, Financieele Dagblad said on Friday.
“We are already active in the Netherlands and Germany successfully,” founder Joris Beckers told the newspaper in an interview. “So why wouldn’t it work in England, France, Spain or Poland?”.
According to the FD, it appears that the focus is on the company’s new range of organic products, which has information in English and French on the packaging, as well as in German and Dutch.
The organic range should be launched in a few weeks. “Having your own label is part of being a mature supermarket,” Beckers said. They also have traditionally higher margins than A brands, the FD pointed out.
Picnic was founded in 2015 and currently delivers groceries to 125 cities in the Netherlands and Germany.
