Ovince Saint Preux reflects on the COVID-19 saga, the UFC on the victory of ESPN + 34

LAS VEGAS – Before, during and after being infected with the disease, Ovince Saint Preux was not afraid of COVID-19 himself. These are the ramifications of the disease he fears the most. After his huge second round knockout against Alonzo Menifield (9-2 MMA, 2-2 UFC) at UFC on ESPN + 34, Saint Preux (25-14 MMA, 13-9 UFC) explained the games more mentally difficult to cope with the illness caused by the coronavirus.

After Saint Preux tested positive ahead of a previously scheduled game against Menifield on August 22, the fight was called off. The fight was revamped for Saturday, which made OSP nervous that he would encounter the same issue again ahead of UFC on ESPN + 34.

“I’m telling you,” Saint Preux said at the post-fight press conference. “All the panic is (crazy). When I did the COVID test at home I was like, “OK, cool. I did not hear anything. This is a negative result. I arrived on Tuesday. I did not hear anything. Negative result. During weighings, same thing: negative result. When I was cleared and I was good, I said to myself: “Thank you”.

“Now I’m trying to look at my sneakers and say ‘OK, look.’ I had negatives. Pretty much I know my coaches had negative points. I was like, “The last thing I need is I walk alone if all my coaches are positive or something like that. But everything worked. Everything worked out perfectly.

Everything went well for Saint Preux indeed. The finish was vicious – an easy addition to Saint Preux’s long reel of highlights. Halfway through the fight, Menifield rushed into an attack and Saint Preux made him pay.

“Alonzo is a powerful puncher,” said Saint Preux. “He’s too committed. When he got too engaged, he let himself open and his chin looked straight at me. I just landed perfectly. It’s kind of the same thing that happened when I fought ‘Shogun’ (Rua).

UFC on ESPN + 34 took place on Saturday at UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The event was broadcast on ESPN +.
