OPP reacts to ‘car buyback’ after modified cars raid on Wasaga Beach

The Ontario Provincial Police released aerial footage showing large crowds watching drivers perform stunts in an unauthorized car “take-over” in Wasaga Beach over the weekend.

Video captured by an OPP helicopter shows cars running out of steam as spectators are seen filming the stunt with their phones.

Drivers have also been seen running and running donuts in other videos posted to social media.

The OPP said it believed thousands of car enthusiasts, mostly non-residents, had flocked to the seaside town to attend the weekend’s event.

Later in the video, several OPP cruisers could be seen arriving at the rallies to disperse them.

“These were popping up in the city and disappearing as quickly as they appeared,” said the OPP Sgt. Said Jason Folz.

“It’s part of their tactic that they use to distract the police – maybe at one end of town and then have another rally at another end. ”

Folz said the OPP temporarily closed the city on Saturday night, refusing visitors as it became impossible to enforce COVID-19 gathering rules due to the size of the crowd.
