Nissan Z Proto presents retro-inspired V6 sports car

Body color accents are also tied to the exterior and the nacelle gauges on top of the dashboard (one for turbo boost pressure) and door handles are clear ties to the 370Z.Nissan has not disclosed details of the twin-turbo V6 powertrain, although Autocar understands that it is actually a reworked version of the 3.0-liter unit used in the flagship Infiniti Q60 coupe. There it produces 400 horsepower, but given that the new Z car is expected to be significantly lighter than the 1,825kg Q60, it should be a bit faster. Expect it to have a lot more torque than the naturally aspirated V6 used in the 370Z.

Chief Product Specialist Hiroshi Tamura says there’s more to the car than speed. “Z is a balance between power and agility. It is a vehicle that creates a connection with the driver not only on a physical level but also emotionally, ”he said.

Key to this includes the use of a six-speed manual gearbox in the prototype, thwarting the industry’s broader trend towards automation. Even so, an auto option is likely for the United States.

No date has been given for the Z-Series car’s launch. However, given the prototype’s seemingly finished interior design, a debut in 2021 is likely.

Where does inspiration come from?

The Z Proto’s connection to the 50-year history of the Z car is obvious. “We explored two directions,” said Alfonso Albaisa, Nissan’s global design manager. “One with a strong tribute tone and one with a futuristic feeling throughout. Our designers have done countless studies and sketches, researching each generation to better understand what made it so successful… Ultimately, we agreed that this new Z Proto should travel between decades, including the future. .

Various references to the 240Z and 240ZG can be seen, but there are also nods to the 300ZX from the 1990s. Why?

“The 300ZX was a technological breakthrough for Z and Nissan,” said Albaisa. “The homogeneous surfaces and absence of bodywork gave it a smooth, river stone-like quality,” the new car said.
