PUBLICITY

In this illustration provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in January 2020 shows the 2019 novel coronavirus.

In an email sent to the parents of Sir Winston Churchill’s students, Principal Ann Gilmore confirmed that one person had tested positive for COVID-19.

Nine schools in Niagara have now been affected by the pandemic which has resulted in 11 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus since September 8.

Of these cases, six come from the public council, four from the Catholic council and one from the Franco-Catholic council, which resulted in the closure of five classes. The five classroom closures come from the public council.

For Sir Winston, at the south end of St. Catharines, Gilmore said Monday: “The Niagara Region Public Health Unit is currently assessing the situation and if your child needs to self-isolate, NRPH will contact you directly tonight. If you are not contacted by NRPH, your child will not need to isolate himself and can continue to attend school. ”

Gilmore did not indicate whether the person was a staff member or a student, but did notify parents that public health is assessing the situation.

Gilmore said “Institutional Services” will complete the school’s deep clean.

“We will continue to be vigilant as a school community with our preventive practices, such as wearing PPE, physical distancing, hand hygiene and daily health screening,” she said. .

Also on Monday, MonAvenir Catholic Schools confirmed a case of COVID-19 at Sacré-Coeur Catholic Elementary School in Welland.

The District School Board of Niagara schools with confirmed cases are: Ferndale Elementary School, William Hamilton Merritt Elementary School and Sir Winston in St. Catharines and Eastdale Secondary School in Welland.

The Niagara Catholic District School Board schools with confirmed cases are Canadian Martyrs Catholic Elementary School and Holy Cross Catholic High School in St. Catharines, and Mary Ward Catholic Elementary School and St. Vincent Catholic Elementary School. from Paul to Niagara Falls.
