Sturgeon will speak to Boris Johnson on the phone this afternoon as Holyrood and Westminster assess what options to take.
A number of regions have already put in place restrictions on social gatherings, but it is believed more measures could be announced later this week.
It comes as 245 cases have been confirmed in the past 24 hours with no new deaths.
The number of deaths from a positive case remains at 2,505, while the total number of confirmed cases in Scotland has risen to 24,371.
As of Saturday, 350 positive cases were identified, the largest daily increase in four months.
The transmission rate in Scotland – or R number – is now estimated to be between 1.1 and 1.4.
