‘Newcastle must be crazy’ – Aston Villa fans crowd in as transfer nears completion

Callum Wilson is in the North East putting the finishing touches on a deal that will see him join Newcastle United ahead of Aston Villa.Steve Bruce’s current side have beaten his former club to the £ 21million signing from the Bournemouth striker – leaving Villa still on the hunt for a new center-forward.

Wilson is expected to have his medical exam today – 24 hours after Villa decided to back out of a deal when the 28-year-old indicated his preference for a move to St James’ Park.

And some Villa fans are relieved that they did.

@ Robbb182: Wilson joining Newcastle on a 4 year contract (supposedly with an optional 5th year, which Wilson can trigger)… makes me VERY relieved that I don’t sign him. It might be good for them, but we’ve put this stupid business behind us for a reason.

@ AndrewMahon17: So £ 100,000 a week which is just £ 25million salary no wonder we left Newcastle must be crazy !!

@ dancingken1: Callum Wilson on a 5 year contract? Both knees are crumpled and rely on penalties to score goals

@ VillaRidders09: Re: Wilson. A 5 year contract for a 28 year old over £ 80k + a week is not something the villa should entertain

@ Dean30201087: 5 years with massive salaries for an injury-prone 28-year-old forward who had a worse goals-per-game ratio than Wesley last season. The real reason he wanted to go to Newcastle. I congratulate our recruiting staff on their withdrawal. We’re running fine now everyone

@ arb0417: Upfront transfer fee of £ 20m and salary £ 20m over the next 5 years? You are welcome at Callum Wilson. And make no mistake, he pulled on Villa and Newcastle’s pants here. Fortunately, the short-lived pain for Villa. We move forward.

@Tomtyrone: Serious bullet avoided by not signing Wilson… Bruce signing him speaks volumes… .. we know the signatures he chooses and how they end…
