New Westminster firefighters scramble to put out the pier fire


New Westminster firefighters say they are working to put out a blaze at Westminster Pier Park.Much of the park promenade is on fire, just off the railroad on Front Street, witnesses at the scene said.

Front Street has been closed in the area as firefighters work to put out the blaze.

Deputy Chief Tyler Moore of the Vancouver Fire and Rescue Service said on Twitter that the service had dispatched a fire boat to assist crews in New West.

“It looks like we’ll be here for a while,” he said in the tweet, which featured a photo showing large flames.

New Westminster Fire and Rescue Services have yet to share details of the blaze, such as its exact location, size, what may have caused it or if there were any injuries.

People started posting about the fire on social media around 8:30 p.m. PT.

SkyTrain affected

TransLink said that due to the fire, there is no SkyTrain service between Columbia and Scott Road stations.

Trains heading to Vancouver’s King George Station are now diverted to Production Way-University Station.

All trains from King George Station make a U-turn at Scott Road Station.

An additional bus service has been put in place to transport commuters between Columbia and Scott Road stations.

Millennium and Canada Line service is unaffected and is operating, TranLink said in a statement.
