America’s most powerful elected Democrat, Nancy Pelosi, visited a barbershop in San Francisco, breaking rules that only allow outside service, in order to control the spread of the coronavirus.
Ms Pelosi has also been seen with a face mask around her neck rather than over her mouth. She criticized President Donald Trump for not wearing a mask.
A spokesperson said she didn’t realize she was breaking rules in her hometown.
Mr Trump said she was “wiped out” after lecturing everyone.
Thousands of California businesses have closed as part of measures to fight the coronavirus.
Images obtained by Fox News showed the Speaker of the House of Representatives on the premises of eSalon SF on Monday.
A stylist, who wore a mask, was shown following him.
Ms Pelosi – who always wears masks in public – often urges Republicans to “listen to the science” on the pandemic.
Defending his visit, spokeswoman Drew Hammill said in a statement: “This case offered to the President to come on Monday and told him that they were authorized by the city to have one client at a time in the company. ”
“The President complied with the rules presented to him by this establishment. ”
Ms Pelosi herself has previously cited guidance from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control recommending that Americans wear face masks in public, especially when physical distancing measures are difficult.
After Monday’s appointment, the House speaker appeared on MSNBC with the Golden Gate Bridge in the background.
She told the network that Mr. Trump “slapped science in the face” last week by allowing an audience of mostly maskless guests on the White House lawn to watch his speech at the Republican convention.
Salon owner Erica Kious told Fox News she was renting chairs from a stylist, who informed her that Ms Pelosi’s assistant had called, saying her boss wanted to come and wash and dry off.
Ms Kious told the cable network: “It was a slap she walked in, you know, she feels she can just go and do her business when no one else can walk in, and I can’t. not working . ”
More than 5,000 businesses in the San Francisco Bay Area alone have closed since March, including more than 2,000 permanently, during the pandemic, according to a recent survey of Yelp data.
Outdoor haircuts were allowed in California from Tuesday, under new rules announced by the mayor, but indoor salons remain closed.
Senate Republicans have suggested the Speaker of the House is a hypocrite.
They tweeted: “President Pelosi pushed for policies that would keep our economy closed and our small businesses closed.
“But for herself? A visit to the salon when she wants. ”
The Speaker of the House has previously said Republicans could help create the conditions necessary to safely reopen if they “only listen to the scientists.”
Ms Pelosi has also repeatedly criticized Mr Trump’s decision to widely reject face coverings, calling him “cowardly” and saying, “Real men wear masks.”
The US president reminded the speaker of her statements, promising to win the House in the November election.
And he congratulated the owner of the salon for having “denounced” her.
