More than 200 naked convicts on the run after prison break in Uganda | World news

More than 200 naked convicts are on the run in Uganda after escaping prison before stripping naked and running into the wilderness.

The escapees, who have been described as “die-hard” criminals, ditched their yellow uniforms to avoid being spotted as they ran through the foothills of Mount Moroto.

Flavia Byekwaso, a spokeswoman for the Ugandan army, called the region a “desert”.

She also warned that escaped detainees could attack local homes in search of clothing.

Ugandan forces are looking for the convicts, who escaped Wednesday from a prison near barracks in the northeastern district of Moroto.

The escapees then burst into an arsenal.

Ms Byekwaso said at least three people died in a shooting that erupted during the escape.

Those who died were a soldier and two of the 219 escapees.

Ms Byekwaso said: “They overpowered the director who was on duty. ”

She added that the detainees are “hard-core” criminals who have been jailed for cattle theft offenses in the area.

Ms. Byekawaso added, “The lawsuit continues. ”

It was not possible to immediately reach the prison authorities or local officials.
