Michelle Obama confessed that there were “times when I wanted to push Barack out the window” as she spoke of the presidential couple’s wedding.

The former first lady, 56, told young couples that ‘if this breaks up a marriage then Barack and I have been broken up time and time again … but we have a very strong marriage’.

Speaking to Conan O’Brien on his Michelle Obama podcast, she also warned that “you can’t work your way into a long-term relationship” – with Obamas set to celebrate their 28th birthday next month.

Barack and Michelle Obama, pictured on their wedding day in 1992, have been married for 28 years, including Mr. Obama’s eight years in the White House.

Mrs Obama compared choosing a husband or wife to selecting a basketball team – saying she married “my version of LeBron.”

“If we think of marriage as a real team, you want your teammate to be a winner. You want LeBron, you know, she said.

She added: “There were times when I wanted to push Barack out the window. And I’m saying because it’s like, you have to know that the feelings will be intense.

“But that doesn’t mean you quit. And these periods can last a long time. They can last for years.

Ms Obama expanded on her thoughts in an Instagram post on Sunday, saying marriage “takes a lot of work, a lot of honesty with ourselves and our partners.”

“It’s something that I learned. I would love to hear some of the things you learned about marriage and yourself, ”she told her 42 million followers.

The Obamas will celebrate their 28th wedding anniversary on Oct. 3, after Michelle marked the occasion last year by saying the couple “still felt the magic that brought us together all those years ago.”

“Twenty-seven years ago this guy promised me an adventurous life. I would say it’s delivered, she said.

As president, Barack Obama spent the evening of his 20th birthday debating Republican challenger Mitt Romney ahead of the 2012 election.

“There are a lot of points I want to stress tonight, but the most important thing is that 20 years ago I became the luckiest man in the world because Michelle Obama agreed to marry me”, he told the audience.

“And so, I just want to wish you, my dear, a happy birthday and let you know that in a year we won’t be celebrating it in front of 40 million people,” he joked.

Obama won the election to win a second term, before the couple left the White House and handed over to Donald Trump in January 2017.

Since then, the Obamas have gone further than many former presidents and first ladies in fiercely criticizing Trump’s presidency.

Trump canceled or watered down some of key Obama initiatives such as the Iran nuclear deal and the Paris climate change accords.

The two Obamas gave impassioned speeches at the Democratic National Convention last month, urging voters to support Joe Biden in the November election.

“Donald Trump is not the right president for our country,” said Mrs. Obama. “He’s had more than enough time to prove he can do the job, but he’s clearly over his head. “

Speaking to Trump during the recent racial protests, she said: “The mere fact that a black life matters always draws derision from the highest office in the country. “

Mrs. Obama’s speech was her fourth at a Democratic convention, having first presented to the nation during her husband’s campaign in 2008.

However, she said she had no desire to follow her husband, 59, into politics despite his popularity in the party.

Ms. Obama has been voted America’s Most Admired Woman in Gallup polls for the past two consecutive years.

She also won the title of the world’s most admired woman in a YouGov poll last year, replacing Angelina Jolie in first place.

The couple’s daughters, Malia and Sasha, were just 10 and 7 years old respectively when the family moved into the White House in 2009.

They are now students, with Malia at Harvard and Sasha at the University of Michigan, although education has been disrupted by the pandemic.

Since leaving the White House, Michelle Obama has also published her memoir Becoming while the former president is working on her own book.

More than 10 million copies of Becoming have been sold worldwide since it was first published in November 2018.

Ms. Obama then embarked on a rock star-style tour of more than 30 cities in the United States, Canada and Europe to promote the autobiography.

The couple also signed a deal with Netflix to produce movies and series that they say will entertain, but also “educate, connect and inspire us all.”

In 2019, they bought their third home, a property on Martha’s Vineyard, adding to their homes in Chicago and Washington.
