Speaking from what appeared to be the living room of her home in Los Angeles, Meghan said she and Prince Harry had been captivated by Archie’s story and cheered him on every week.
During his first hearing, Archie recounted how he spent 36 years in prison after being wrongly convicted of rape and attempted murder at the age of 22.
After reaching the talent show final, host Terry Crews left him speechless with a specially recorded message from former Queen Royal Meghan Markle.
Crews said: “Throughout this Archie season your story and your talent have touched and inspired people around the world and we have a very message for you from a special fan… Meghan, Duchess of Sussex.
A radiant and undulating Meghan then appeared on the screen.
Hi Archie, just wanted to let you know that we were so moved by your story and cheer you on every week and it’s not just because we have a soft spot for the name, “joked the former actress from Suits, who has a one-year-old son named Archie.
She continued; “So a very special message for you that I will probably say all my life, but tonight is specifically for you: Archie, we are proud of you and we are supporting for you, we can’t wait to see what you do. We are in your corner, have a good night. ”
Archie has become a standout star this season of America’s Got Talent, not only for his incredible singing voice, but also for his shocking true life story.
The 59-year-old was wrongly convicted of rape and attempted murder in Louisana and spent 12 years in prison.
At the age of 12, he appealed to Project Innocence to help exonerate him. Years later, the fingerprints found at the crime scene matched those of a serial rapist and Archie was released after being locked up for almost 40 years.
He spoke about his ordeal during the hearing, telling the judges; “I knew I was innocent, I didn’t commit any crime. But being a poor black kid, I didn’t have the economic capacity to fight the state of Louisiana
“Days have turned into weeks, months, years and decades. It’s like a nightmare. ”
During his audition, Archie performed an emotional rendition of Elton John’s Don’t Let The Sun Go Down on Me that left the judges in tears.
After giving him a standing ovation for Archie, Simon Cowell told him: “Archie, I will never listen to this song the same way again,” Judge Simon Cowell told him. “It took on a whole new meaning for me. You are a very courageous person. It’s an audition I’ll never forget in my whole life, Archie. ”
In the finale, Archie sang the Beatles classic Blackbird and was once again praised for his flawless performance.
In the end, Meghan’s seal of approval wasn’t enough to secure the victory for Archie as he lost to spoken word artist Brandon Leake in the final.
Meghan’s appearance on AGT comes a day after she and Harry appeared on prime-time TV in the United States to celebrate Time magazine’s most influential people list.
The pair were seen on a bench outside side by side where they spoke about the importance of voting in the upcoming election.
