On Wednesday, the streaming giant announced it had reached a deal with Meghan and Harry to produce films, documentaries and children’s shows for its platform. This follows a similar deal Netflix made with Barack and Michelle Obama in 2018.

However, the deal could cause tensions between the couple and the royal family as a whole.According to a royal insider, speaking to The Mirror, any contract signed by Meghan and Harry “will be reviewed by the royal household”.

The source said: ‘Harry and Meghan left as active family members with best wishes from everyone and we sincerely hope that they will find the happiness that seemed to be lacking in their lives.

“However, it goes without saying that any deals they make will be reviewed by the royal household.

“Under the terms of their agreement to relinquish royal duties, they agreed that any trade deal would be subject to discussion.

“This deal with Netflix, speaking engagements or any other corporate work are examples of that. ”

‘The royals and high courtiers will know what this looks like to the public, especially as the couple have yet to repay the £ 2.4million they have promised to pay back to the taxpayer for Frogmore Cottage , which will be their British base. ”

It’s unclear if Harry and Meghan will use their titles, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, for their Netflix project.

In January, the couple caused a stir around the world when they announced their plans to step down from the royal family.

Instead, they vowed to become “financially independent” while dividing their time between North America and Britain.

Following discussions with the Senior Royals, Meghan and Harry have agreed to drop their ‘Sussex Royal’ brand and reimburse the £ 2.4million taxpayers spent to renovate Frogmore Cottage, their old home near Windsor .

According to The Mirror, this sum has not yet been fully refunded.

In a statement, Ted Sarandos, director of content for Netflix, said the company was delighted with their deal with the couple.

He said: “Harry and Meghan have inspired millions of people around the world with their authenticity, optimism and leadership.

“We are extremely proud that they have chosen Netflix as their creative home – and are delighted to tell stories with them that can help build resilience and increase understanding for audiences around the world.”

The Duke and Duchess recently moved into a £ 11.2million house in a town north of Los Angeles.

The luxury property includes a tennis court, swimming pool and children’s cottage.

Reacting to their deal with Netflix, Meghan and Harry commented, “Our lives, both independent of each other and as a couple, have enabled us to understand the power of the human spirit, courage, resilience and need connection.

“Through our work with diverse communities and their environments, to shed light on people and causes around the world, we will focus on creating content that informs but also gives hope.
