Rappers Megan Thee Stallion and Tory Lanez are back in the news after Tory denied shooting Megan in the feet in one of his new songs.

The case has led to several high-profile disputes in the US music industry.

It has also sparked a debate about perceptions of gender-based violence against black women and concerns within the African American community about police brutality.

Authorities in Los Angeles say investigations are underway.

How did it start?

In the early hours of July 12, police responded to an incident of “gunfire” in the Hollywood Hills, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) said in a statement.

An argument allegedly took place inside a vehicle, with gunshots in the air, before the vehicle left the scene.

The LAPD said officers then carried out a “road check” on a vehicle matching a description provided by eyewitnesses, and “several people were arrested”.

Tory Lanez, 28, real name Daystar Peterson, was charged with carrying a concealed weapon and released on bail later that morning.

In a July 15 statement, Los Angeles Police said another person was taken to hospital and treated for an unspecified “foot injury”.

Megan Thee Stallion alleges she was gunned down as she walked away from Tory Lanez

Megan Thee Stallion – real name Megan Pete – alleged that four people were in the car at the time: herself, a friend, Mr. Peterson, and her bodyguard.

Initially, TMZ reported Ms Pete cut her foot off the broken glass in the car. But on July 15, she released a statement saying she had suffered “multiple gunshot wounds… done with the intent to injure me physically.”

Several days later, in an Instagram post, Ms Pete shared graphic images of the stitches in her heel and doctors attending to her foot.

On August 20, for the first time, she named Mr. Peterson as the alleged shooter as she spoke in a video on Instagram Live. She said when the police found her they did not tell them what happened because she feared they would start firing if they believed a weapon was involved.

“I didn’t say anything to the police, because I didn’t want us to have more problems than we were about to enter,” she said, denying that she physically assaulted Mr. Peterson.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said it is reviewing another charge against Mr Peterson for the alleged shooting. A spokesperson told the Los Angeles Times that a decision will be made after further investigation by law enforcement.

Sources told the newspaper that a bullet may have deflected, shrapnel hitting Ms Pete.

How did Tory Lanez respond?

On his new album, Daystar, released on September 25, Mr. Peterson refers to the incident in several songs and denies shooting Ms. Pete. This is the first time he has publicly responded to the allegations.

“Megan’s people are trying to frame me,” he raps during the song Money Over Fallout. “Girl, you had the nerve to write that statement on that affidavit, knowing that I’m not doing it but coming to my mind.”

In the same song, he casts doubt on whether she was shot at all, asking, “How the hell did you touch your foot, didn’t hit any bones or tendons?” ”

Ms Pete has not publicly responded to the accusation that she is trying to trick Mr Peterson.

Why is it important?

The two artists are very successful in the industry. Megan Thee Stallion’s controversial song with Cardi B, called WAP, is currently number one on the US singles charts – her second top of the year. Tory Lanez has also had several popular hits, most recently in April with The New Toronto 3.

The incident sparked a debate on violence against black women and public perceptions on the issue.

Since her initial statement, Ms. Pete has received support from artists such as Beyoncé, Rihanna and Lizzo. But his accusations were also met with disbelief and ridicule.

Among those who laughed at her was rapper 50 Cent, but he has since apologized.

“I posted a meme that was floating around,” he wrote on Twitter. “I wouldn’t have done this if I had known you were really hurt sorry.”

Megan Thee Stallion hit back at the ridicule circulating online, saying, “This is my real life and I am in real life hurt and traumatized. “

His apparent reluctance to inform police about the alleged shooting also touched a nerve within the African American community over relations with law enforcement.

Dozens of American cities have been rocked by protests this year, sparked by the deaths of several blacks at the hands of police – including George Floyd and Breonna Taylor.
