Maya Hawke struggled in school as a child.

In a recent interview with NPR, the 22-year-old “Stranger Things” star – also the daughter of Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman – explored her experience with dyslexia.

While it was “deeply difficult” to live with the learning disability, Hawke also finds it “one of the great blessings of [her] life in many ways. ”

These days, however, there are “so many options” that have helped her put her dyslexia to good use.

“There is something about having had a limitation in my ability to produce and accept stories that made me even more determined to love them, understand them and grow in them”, Hawke said.

The star said she was “bullied” when her classmates learned that she had difficulty reading, but said her famous “parents did a great job of encouraging [her] to be creative. ”

The star took care of her 40s by tapping into that creativity and making music with her family.

In March, Hawke shared a video of herself singing with sisters Clementine and Indiana, as well as her father. They were all accompanied by his brother Levon.
