Amid an increase in Covid-19 cases in the UK, Boris spoke to the public and advised them on the new rules to be put in place.
But viewers have been waiting for Bake Off for so long, and just couldn’t hide their displeasure that the show was delayed and the message played in its slot.
So when the show finally started on the channel, viewers were forced to double the take when Boris returned to the screen behind his famous podium.
But it wasn’t Boris at all, and it was actually new host Matt Lucas delivering the new message.
Viewers were quickly immersed in hysteria when they saw Matt’s version of Boris deliver his own speech to the nation, this time a warning about baking.
From debating the correct way to pronounce scones, to telling people to ‘bake in a tent if they want to, but don’t bake in a tent,’ fans hailed him as’ genius. “.
Matt had posted similar videos online earlier this year, after confusing government posts.
But on Tuesday night, Matt pulled off what viewers claimed was the “best opening in history” by posing as Boris directly after the official message to the nation.
Watching at home, viewers praised Matt and the show, saying it caused much-needed laughs.
Taking to Twitter, they shared their thoughts as the new series began.
One fan said: “Matt Lucas is exactly what the country needs to lift our spirits. ”
Another said: “I learned more from Matt Lucas than from Boris…”
A third tweeted: “BETTER. OPENING OF THE SERIES. NEVER. ”
Meanwhile, a fourth added, “I think Matt Lucas absolutely just did 2020.”
A fifth commented: “Stopping taking p ** s from government is exactly what I needed right now. ”
The Great British Bake Off airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on Channel 4.
