This week, Mariah Carey is publishing a new memoir called The meaning of Mariah Carey. The brief contains the revelation that she “made an alternative album” while working on her 1995 album. Dream (which includes “Fantasy” and “Always Be My Baby”). She tweeted an excerpt from the memoir, which deals with her work on Chick’s 1995 album Someone’s ugly daughter. It includes a preview of the song “Hermit”, which features Carey’s background vocals as a “hidden layer”.According to Carey’s rep, she wrote, produced, and sang background vocals on every song on Chick’s album. (Of course she didn’t write “Surrender,” which is a cover of Cheap Trick.) She’s also responsible for the artistic direction of the album’s packaging and directed one of the band’s music videos. The album is currently not available on streaming services, but find music videos and clips from the album in the playlist below. Its excerpt reads as follows:
I would bring my little alternative rock song to the band and hum a silly guitar riff. They would pick it up and we would register it immediately. It was irreverent, raw and urgent, and the band got down to it. I started to like some of the songs. I would fully commit to my character. I was playing in the style of the punk-light-grunge white singers that were popular at the time. You know those who seemed so carefree with their feelings and their image. They could be angry, angry, and messy, with old shoes, wrinkled slips, and unruly eyebrows, yet every move I made was so calculated and neat. I wanted to break free, let go and express my misery – but I also wanted to laugh. I was really looking forward to doing my alter-ego group sessions after Dream each night.
