MEN Sport understand United will take another striker on trial at the reserves level this week as they look to strengthen their options ahead of the league’s new campaign.
Anthony Elanga is the only natural strike option available for United at the Under-23 level, with the club suffering a setback following an injury to D’Mani Mellor. The 19-year-old is expected to stay on the sidelines for a long time after an ACL injury.
This means that 18-year-old Elanga, who is naturally a left winger, has been tasked with leading the line for United’s U23s in their pre-season preparation.
Elanga scored for United in their 3-3 draw with Huddersfield last month, while Hannibal Mejbri has also been used in a more attacking capacity in recent friendlies.
United are entering the new reserve campaign with a very young squad, even by Under-23 standards, with much of their squad still in their teens. The squad are also expected to be weakened in the coming weeks with seasoned trio Dylan Levitt, James Garner and Di’Shon Bernard among those set to step out.
United are next in action at youth level when they face Salford City in the opening game of their Football League Trophy campaign on Wednesday night.
