Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is aiming for three more additions this summer after the Red Devils struck a £ 40.3million deal for Ajax midfielder Donny van de Beek.

The 23-year-old underwent his medical examination in Amsterdam today after being cleared out of the Netherlands training camp ahead of his country’s upcoming international matches.

United have followed the Dutchman for a long time but they seized the opportunity to sign him late last week after Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman pledged to prioritize other midfield targets .

Jadon Sancho has been United’s priority for months, but a quick deal for Van de Beek will calm the nerves of many fans, who were starting to worry about the lack of signings.

While Sancho still remains the target, The Times claim the winger is just one of three other signings Solskjaer wants to make this summer.

Solskjaer wants Sancho to fill a void on the right wing that Mason Greenwood temporarily filled towards the end of the season.

Although the 18-year-old has shone, Greenwood’s long-term future is in the middle and Solskjaer wants Sancho’s blistering pace on the wing in order to pivot his top three.

Elsewhere, the Norwegian wants to sign a quick center-back to play alongside Harry Maguire.

Victor Lindelof teamed up with Maguire throughout last season, but neither of them have the pace to play a high line and Solskjaer wants a faster defender alongside Maguire in order to push his team further on the ground.

RB Leipzig ace Dayot Upamecano is a target for the club but it is doubtful the Frenchman is ready for Premier League football.

Perhaps most intriguing is Solskjaer’s desire to sign another striker. Odion Ighalo extended his loan at the club in January and he was signed with a view to allowing Solskjaer to spend his budget on other areas of the squad.

However, Ighalo’s minutes have dried up following the restart and Solskjaer wants a better alternative to Anthony Martial so the Frenchman can experience real competition.

With £ 40million of Solskjaer’s budget already spent, it seems inevitable that the club will have to sell if they are close to meeting their other goals.

Jesse Lingard, Phil Jones, Andreas Pereira, Chris Smalling, Sergio Romero and Marcos Rojo are all surplus to requirement and are available for transfer,

However, although there are many clubs generating interest, United have long struggled to whip their deadwood due to the extremely high salaries paid at Old Trafford.

Therefore, the club may have to accept a lower upfront fee just to get some of the unwanted players off the books, especially in a post-pandemic world.
