Man Utd add squad to first squad as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer clears move

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has transferred promising defender Teden Mengi from the club’s junior setup to the first team. The Manchester Evening News reports that 18-year-old Mengi has made the leap to join the senior squad indefinitely after impressing Solskjaer in training and games.

With the coronavirus restrictions in place at the United Carrington training complex, the first team and young players are encouraged to train in their separate bubbles so as not to interact with each other.

Mengi got his first glimpse of senior Old Trafford action when he took over in the 84th minute from Timothy Fosu-Mensah in the 2-1 Europa League win over LASK Linz in early August. , and he was part of the team leading in Germany for the final stages of the competition.

Mengi made his senior debut for United in the Europa League last month

He has since seen his team number drop from 71 to 43 and he played the full 90 minutes as captain in United’s 6-0 Under-23 win at Salford in the Football League trophy last week.

Chris Smalling and Marcos Rojo training away from the rest of the squad as they prepare to move, Mengi hopes to make the Carabao Cup third round next week in Luton Town.

Solskjaer referred to the youngster in an interview with BBC Radio Five Live ahead of the season, saying: “We always thought our academy would provide players and Teden definitely impressed me.

“It’s different to trust defenders on the big stage, of course.

“You have to make sure he’s ready for that, you see examples of Ajax, who play in another league but Matthijs de Ligt, they made him captain when he was 18. You can see something special in them.

“Teden has something special about him. It’s about choosing the right time to give it a chance. “
