The film will retrace Madonna’s rise to “a man’s world”

Pop icon Madonna has announced that she will be directing a film about her own life and career.

The star is also co-writing the film with Diablo Cody, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of Juno and Young Adult.

The storyline is expected to trace her rise from the slums of New York to a global superstar, via songs such as Like A Virgin and Vogue.

The star said the film will focus on music, adding, “The music kept me going and the art kept me alive. ”

The still-untitled project will be Madonna’s third as director after Filth and Wisdom of 2008 and WE of 2011, based on King Edward VIII’s affair with Wallis Simpson.

The latter film was criticized by critics and bombed at the box office, grossing just $ 2million (£ 1.5million) against a budget of $ 11million (£ 8.5million).

However, rock and pop biopics are in the middle of a purple stain, with huge successes for Elton John’s Rocketman and Freddie Mercury’s film Bohemian Rhapsody, for which Rami Malek won an Oscar.

Madonna’s entry into the genre will be made by Universal Pictures – which previously angered the artist by entering an unofficial script based on her life.

No casting or production schedule for the film has been announced, but the pop star has charted the early stages of the script on her Instagram account.

In a question-and-answer session with fans, she said the biopic will focus on her “struggle as an artist trying to survive in a man’s world,” adding that the journey covers a range of emotions: ” happy, sad, mad, mad, good, bad and ugly ”.

She added that the plot would address her relationship with artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, the fallout from her controversial video Like A Prayer, and her experience filming Evita.

“I want to convey the incredible journey life has taken for me as an artist, musician, dancer – human being, trying to make my way through this world,” Madonna said in a statement, confirming her role as director.

“It is essential to share the roller coaster of my life with my voice and my vision. “
