Italian financial police and the Perugia prosecutor’s office opened an investigation into allegations of irregularities with Luis Suarez’s Italian citizenship test last week.

Suarez traveled to Perugia to take the test as he was set to join Juventus from Barcelona.

To complete the move, the 33-year-old Uruguayan should have acquired Italian citizenship as Juventus have no space available in their squad for non-European players.

However, it is alleged that Suarez was aware of the content of the exam before taking it and that his grade was pre-assigned.

A statement from the Perugia prosecutor’s office said: “Some irregularities appeared during the Italian certification exam, organized on September 17 by Uruguayan footballer Luis Alberto Suarez Diaz, necessary to obtain Italian nationality.

“From the investigation, it appeared that the subjects of the exam had been agreed in advance with the applicant and that the relative mark was awarded even before taking the exam, regardless of whether an elementary mastery of the Italian language had been verified during distance courses given by professors of the University of Foreigners.
