The Air has up to 1080 horsepower available in its dual-engine all-wheel drive architecture. Lucid tells us that the vehicle is capable of achieving times of 9.9 seconds over a quarter mile consistently and repeatably.
Lucid seems to really hit all of their marks. The class-leading quarter-mile time would still be pretty impressive if that was the one thing the Air was good at, but it didn’t, and not by far.
When the Air hits the market next year, it will offer the longest range of any electric vehicle, with a range estimated at 517 miles by the EPA. It will also have the lowest drag coefficient of any production vehicle with a Cd of 0.21. Plus, as we reported last week, the Air will also have top-notch interior space and the largest trunk of any electric vehicle. If that wasn’t enough, it will also be the fastest charging electric vehicle available. add 300 miles of range in just 20 minutes.
In short, the Air: will have the longest range of all electric vehicles, will charge faster than any other electric vehicle, will have more interior space and a larger frunk than any electric vehicle in its class, will have the lowest drag coefficient of any car available, and now we’re finding out that it will also be the fastest production electric vehicle in the world. Hmm, there seems to be a trend here.
“Our watchword has been ‘focus’ from day one at Lucid – a focus on sound engineering principles, a focus on creating efficiency and a focus on maximizing power to create an electric vehicle. world-class, ”said Peter Rawlinson, CEO and CTO, Lucid Motors. “When the Lucid Air hits the market next spring, the world will see that we have developed by far the best electric vehicle technology possible and that we have indeed created a new benchmark for electric vehicles. The result is nothing less than a technological tour de force in all the facets on which a luxury performance car is measured.
Lucid has developed extremely compact and ultra-efficient permanent magnet electric motors, creating an electric drive unit that weighs just 163 lbs (74 kg) which Lucid says is small enough to fit in a standard roller bag. Each drive unit delivers over 650 hp and has a power density far beyond anything on offer today at 41 hp per liter.
Since the drive units are so compact, they allow up to three of them to be used to power a Lucid Air, which means we could possibly see a three-motor setup in the future. Lucid explains that the drive units are 45% lighter and up to 59% more powerful than its closest competitor, which would obviously be Tesla.
We got a glimpse of today’s announcement a few days ago when Lucid tweeted “How fast is your dream?” #LucidAir Dream Edition vs. 1/4 Mile Test Sonoma, CA. Followed by the reminder that Lucid Air’s global reveal is scheduled for September 9.
The Air is truly becoming a special electric vehicle, and we look forward to the production version’s worldwide reveal on September 9. Stay tuned for this and other Lucid news here as we step up our coverage of Lucid now that there is less than a year to go until production and shipments to customers begin.
