“My husband John lived by a code: country first. We are Republicans, yes, but mostly Americans. There is only one candidate in this race who stands up for our values as a nation, and that is Joe Biden, ”she said, at a defining moment in Biden’s election campaign.
She appeared live on the breakfast TV news shows on Wednesday to talk about the expected approval, especially after she appeared in a video that aired at the Democratic National Convention last month, but which did not ‘was only made official the night before.
“I’ve watched what’s going on and I’m deeply concerned,” McCain told NBC’s Today show.
She never mentioned Donald Trump’s name, but Trump has had a strained relationship with the McCain family since he disparaged the Arizona senator during his 2016 campaign.
He has publicly criticized McCain on numerous occasions and was furious when the senator voted against an effort to overturn the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare.
And Trump sadly said of John McCain, who was held captive by the North Vietnamese for over five years and tortured: “He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured… He lost and let us down. I never liked him so much after that. I don’t like losers.
The president was clearly not invited to McCain’s funeral in 2018.
Cindy McCain also said on Wednesday that reports Trump branding fallen US soldiers losers and suckers was “about” the last straw.
“Joe Biden represents the kind of values, integrity and courage we want in a president and I think he would support me as a citizen. I want to feel like my president cares about me, ”she told NBC.
She added that Biden had “great empathy for the people of this country who are struggling, not only with the Covid-19 crisis, but along the way.”
McCain said she hopes she can persuade suburban women who are “on the fence” how to vote or vote at all of this, if they are Republican the brave thing to do is “cross the aisle” and vote for Biden, not Trump, in November.
“Joe Biden is the best man,” she said.
Trump has issued thinly veiled racist warnings and calls for a vote from the white suburbs in recent weeks.
Moments after McCain began his TV interview on Wednesday, Trump aggressively tweeted that “Cindy can have Sleepy Joe” as he dubbed Biden, and criticized, effectively, the continuing conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan and the management of the Veterans Administration (VA) under previous presidents.
When asked about Good Morning America on ABC if she had a comment on Trump’s tweet, McCain scoffed and replied, “Um, I don’t have one.”
On the Republicans’ rush to take the Supreme Court seat left behind by the pre-election death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg on Friday, when they previously blocked Barack Obama’s candidate much further from the 2016 election, McCain said that Republicans “believe in what they do. and that is their prerogative ”.
She added that respecting partisan differences of opinion, listening and raising awareness across the political aisle was a tradition that John McCain and Biden upheld in the Senate that is being lost in a divided America.
