Robertson relishes another ‘assistance duel’ with Alexander-Arnold
Liverpool pair Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold epitomize modern high-profile full-backs as they pose a creative threat in the opposition zone as much as they are defenders as well.
So with a new season in the works, Scotland captain Robertson is enjoying the friendly rivalry with his England international counterpart and local West Derby hero Alexander-Arnold, on which of the two can provide the most goals.
Robertson has already scored his first assist of the campaign with his corner header from Virgil van Dijk for a goal against Leeds United.
The club’s website quotes him as saying:
“It’s a long, very long season so we’ll see how it goes this time around!
“I had a lot of games to make up last season and I almost got there. We both do this competition to get the best out of each other.
“The last two seasons we’ve shown that we can take the numbers to a whole new level for full-backs, especially with Trent breaking the record for a full-back who had held up for many years in 2018-19, then breaking his own record the following year which was amazing.
“If I’m close to him this season I think we both have had a successful season because I can’t see him failing to help with goals and that continues for a long time.
“We like to create chances and I hope that will continue this season because creating chances and creating goals is a big part of how we play and we get a lot of joy from that. It may take a long time, but time will tell.
“It will obviously be difficult to keep these numbers going, but that’s our goal and I hope we can do it.”
