Last gigs of UK’s first socially remote music festival canceled due to northeast lockdown

The last Virgin Money Unity Arena concerts have been canceled due to new coronavirus restrictions.About two million people in the North East are unable to mingle with family and friends due to tough new rules aimed at stopping the growing number of Covid-19 cases in the region.

However, the last shows of this weekend, featuring artists such as Jack Savoretti and the Kaiser Chiefs, have now been retired.

That means Thursday’s show, featured by dance number Chase & Status, will be the last concert of the summer at the arena, dubbed the world’s first socially distant music venue.

“It is extremely disappointing to have to cancel these final shows at the end of what has been an incredible six-week series of successful social distancing concerts,” said event organizer Steve Davis of SSD Concerts.

“We are honored to have been able to provide a little bit of happiness and joy to thousands of music and comedy fans across the region and the UK in what has been such a difficult year for everyone.

“We have complied with all government guidelines to ensure the safety and enjoyment of our audience, artists and team everywhere. We would like to thank everyone who witnessed these truly heartwarming and uplifting events.

“For the past six weeks, Newcastle have been the industry leader in live music and for that we should all be very proud. ”

More than 50,000 people have attended performances in the past month at Britain’s only continuous concert venue since the lockdown.

It has hosted a series of sold-out shows, featuring artists like Sam Fender, The Libertines and Becky Hill.

However, the announcement from Health Secretary Matt Hancock prematurely ends the place. Refunds for any canceled shows will be available at the point of purchase.

“Unfortunately, due to the rise in infection in the North East, we must comply with the latest advice from council and government,” Davis added.

“It shouldn’t take away from the fact that residents of the Northeast and around the world have embraced this pioneering show series.

“On behalf of everyone involved – our Virgin Money sponsors, Newcastle City Council, the dedicated team and staff who worked so hard to make this a success – once again, thank you very much.
