Labor Day 2020: what’s open and what’s closed in the Halifax area


To help you plan for Labor Day, CBC has a list of what’s open and what’s not in the Halifax area on Monday.


Gateway Meat Market: Open Monday 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Pete’s Fine Foods: closed Mondays.

Sobeys: closed Mondays.

Atlantic Superstore: closed Mondays.

Halifax Seaport Farmers Market: closed.

Costco: closed Mondays.

Walmart: closed Mondays.

Shoppers Drug Mart: different hours in different branches; check their website for more details.

Liquor and beer

NSLC: Closed Mondays, but some agency stores may be open.

Bishop’s Cave: Open regular hours from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday.

Propeller Brewing Company: Open regular hours Monday.

Nine Locks Brewing Company: Open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday.

Moosehead Cold Beer Store on Windmill Road: Open regular hours Mondays from 10 am to midnight.

RockHead Wine and Beer Market: open Mondays from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Shopping centers

Halifax Shopping Center: closed Mondays.

Mic Mac Mall: closed Mondays.

Sunnyside Shopping Center: Closed Mondays.

Bedford Place Mall: closed Mondays.

Park Lane Shopping Center: Closed Mondays.

Scotia Square Mall: closed Mondays.

Halifax Public Libraries

All branches will be closed on Monday.


Halifax Transit buses and ferries will operate on statutory holiday schedules on Monday. For detailed vacation schedules by individual itinerary, visit their website.

Waste collection

No municipal waste collection service will take place on Monday.

The Otter Lake waste management facility, the Halifax recycling plant and municipal composting facilities will be closed on Monday.


Most of the city-run recreation facilities will be closed on Monday. Residents are requested to call their respective facilities in advance for opening hours and program information.

The public toilets and first aid at the Emera Oval pavilion will be open on Monday, September 7 from noon to 8 p.m. Rentals won’t be available, but the municipality says residents are welcome to use the Emera Oval for biking and rollerblading with their own equipment. Masks are mandatory in public places, including the public toilets at the Oval Emera.

Lifeguard monitoring and water quality testing at all municipal beaches ended for the summer season on Monday August 31, but the following beaches will reopen from Saturday September 5 to Monday September 7:

  • Chocolate Lake Beach.
  • Kearney Lake Beach.
  • Penhorn lake beach.

Lifeguard surveillance will be in place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. The last day to test the water quality on these beaches is Monday September 7th.

The Algal Bloom Risk Advisory remains in effect for Lake Micmac in Dartmouth. The municipality will notify residents of the lifting of the risk notice.

Most municipal splash pads will remain open until Sunday, September 20. The Halifax Common splash area will be closed for the season on Monday August 31.

Canada Post

There is no collection or delivery of mail on Labor Day. Most post offices will be closed on Monday. However, post offices managed by the private sector may be open depending on the hours of service of the host company.


On-street parking meters are free on Mondays, however, motorists must obey other notice boards.


All banks are closed on Mondays.

311 citizen contact centers

The 311 Contact Center will operate during regular hours, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday.

The three customer service centers that provide in-person access to municipal services and payments will be closed on Monday, September 7 and reopen during normal business hours on Tuesday, September 8.
