The mother of Kyle Rittenhouse, an Illinois teenager accused of killing two people and injuring a third in August during the Black Lives Matter protests in Kenosha, Wisconsin, received a standing ovation at a Wisconsin GOP event Thursday.
Rittenhouse, 17, is charged as an adult with six counts, including two of first degree murder, of shooting Anthony Huber and Joseph Rosenbaum with a military-style semi-automatic rifle. He has become a famous cause among conservatives and has drawn millions of people to his legal defense as he fights extradition to Wisconsin.

Michelle Malkin, an alternative right-wing figure and political commentator who invited Rittenhouse’s mother and lawyer to the Waukesha County Republican Women event, is associated with a variety of white supremacist figures and ideas, according to the ‘Anti-Defamation League. She defended Japanese internment and racial profiling of Muslims after 9/11, ADL says, and called Black Lives Matter a terrorist organization and mocked when his supporters were hit by cars.

Days of protests took place in Kenosha in late August after video showed police shot Jacob Blake, who is black, seven times in the back on August 23 while his children are believed to be in the car. He is now paralyzed.

Blake was facing an arrest warrant in July for sexual assault, trespassing, and disorderly conduct at the time of the incident, when the woman whose complaint motivated the charges called 911 to alert police to Blake’s presence at the home. she. The Department of Justice is investigating the incident.

On August 25, Rittenhouse traveled to Kenosha from his home in Antioch, Ill., With the rifle, which he was too young to legally carry, and joined the dozens of armed Conservative vigilantes converging around the businesses during demonstrations.

Videos from the night of the shoot show Rittenhouse in various locations. In one case, 15 minutes before the shooting, police walk by and offer Rittenhouse and others water out of appreciation. Uneven footage from the shooting incident shows Rittenhouse being chased by a group attempting to grab his rifle, starting to shoot, and then police initially ignoring him as he walks towards them with his hands raised.

Counter-protesters armed with military weapons and bulletproof vests are becoming increasingly common across the country during Black Lives Matter protests.
