Here, Walmart announced a new service to compete with Amazon Prime. The membership program, Walmart +, will be available to all customers on September 15. Here’s everything we know about the service so far.
How much does Walmart + cost?
Walmart + is priced at $ 98 per year or $ 12.95 per month ($ 155.40 per year if you were to pay monthly). You can try the new service for free for up to 15 days. The company’s press release does not mention whether there will be a student discount.
For comparison, Amazon Prime charges $ 119 per year or $ 12.99 per month ($ 155.88 per year if you pay monthly). Amazon Prime offers a 30-day free trial, and students can get a subscription for $ 59 per year or $ 6.49 per month ($ 77.88 per year if you pay monthly).
What does a Walmart + subscription include?
According to Press release, Walmart + will start with three main benefits and the company plans to add more benefits for customers in the future.
The biggest benefit is unlimited free shipping on over 160,000 items. It expands society Unlimited delivery service, which offers free shipping on orders of $ 35 or more. (Amazon offers free shipping on millions of items with no minimum orders.)
Another perk is access to Scan & Go in Walmart’s mobile app, which offers faster in-store purchases. You can scan items while shopping in person and pay with Walmart Pay for contactless payments.
The third benefit is a reduction at the pump. Walmart + members can save up to five cents a gallon at nearly 2,000 Walmart, Murphy USA, and Murphy Express gas stations. The discount will also soon include Sam’s Club gas stations.
How Walmart + Stacks Up To Amazon Prime
Free shipping may be the remarkable benefit of Amazon Prime, but the subscription service includes other benefits that Walmart + does not currently offer. As each program progresses, you can gain access to free shipping on more items, with no minimum order of $ 35, through Amazon Prime, and Amazon Prime offers free access to Prime Video, Prime Music, Prime Photos and Prime Wardrobe.
On the other hand, Walmart + offers a subscription for $ 21 cheaper per year. Walmart + may also offer better value for grocery delivery. While both Walmart + and Amazon’s two grocery options – Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods Market – require a minimum order of $ 35 for free shipping, you might see a drop in grocery prices at Walmart.
Will Walmart + be worth it?
It depends. As with any service, you’ll need to do some basic math to see if the annual fee of $ 98 is worth it. If you live near a Walmart and spend at least $ 35 on groceries each week, paying an extra $ 1.88 per week for free shipping can be a steal.
This can be particularly appealing if you’re trying to avoid in-store shopping amid the pandemic, but if Walmart doesn’t have what you need, it may be best to skip another subscription until the company deploys more benefits.
