At the post-match press conference, Pironkova was asked if she expected to have such an incredible run at the US Open. The Bulgarian remarked that she had no expectations entering the tournament. However, she was happy to have the opportunity to compete and felt confident.
“Well, coming here, I wasn’t expecting – of course I had no expectations at all. I was just happy to have this opportunity. Of course, I had my doubts in my first game, but things started to work out well for me. I played well. I felt good. I felt confident. Pironkova said after losing to Williams in an epic three-set match.
On a lighter note, Pironkova was asked if she thought she would become more famous than fellow Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov if she continued to perform like this. Tsvetana argued that she didn’t want to compare because people knew her before.
“Regarding the notoriety in Bulgaria, I think we are both quite recognizable already. People also know me before. So I’m not trying to compare ” Pironkova said in the post-match interview. Despite the loss, Pironkova admitted that she tried to go as far as she could and that she thought she did a great job.
Tsvetana Pironkova appreciated by Williams
The 23-time Grand Slam champion praised her compatriot Pironkova. Williams said Pironkova, 32, played incredibly well and admitted she could barely win a game when she returned after becoming a mother.
Serena Williams will face her rival Victoria Azarenka in the semi-finals at Flushing Meadows.
