Simon Cowell may still be missing as he recovers from an electric bike accident, but Howie Mandel lives up to Cowell’s cranky reputation on “America’s Got Talent.”
The competition doesn’t get any easier – only five of the 11 acts will advance – and critics from Mandel, who criticized several acts for not stepping up to it in the fourth and final round of the quarter-finals on Tuesday.
Mandel said that Kenadi Dodds’ original song “Dancing Through The Stars” – which she wrote in honor of her younger sister Alexis, who suffers from an eye disease that gradually deteriorates her retina – “did not. not for me personally. ”
“I think it is very negative today,” said Sofía Vergara. Mandel replied to the new judge, “I have been judging much longer than you have. ”

The CA Wildcats cheerleading group didn’t impress Mandel either. “The question I’m asking myself for this particular performance is: did you put it together the last time? Asked the comedian.
Mandel gave the Lightwave Theater Company’s coronavirus-inspired puppeteer routine a red X, saying, “It’s very depressing. I don’t even know what the message is. ”
“Maybe I’m on this shtick tonight about upping it, but it’s the last episode before we go to the semi-finals,” Mandel added, as the virtual audience booed him.
Klum argued that the group’s message to do something nice for someone else during chaotic times “may be sad, but it is reality.” (Lightwave Theater Company faced pandemic ordeal and had to join “AGT” via satellite from Romania due to travel restrictions.)
But Vergara agreed with “Howie negative” this time around, admitting that the group’s first performance during the auditions was “better.”
The harsh words didn’t end there. Mandel compared the performance of vocal duo Broken Roots of U2’s “I Still Havn’t Found What I’m Looking For” to “coffee house music”. He also gave coldness to the vocal trio Resound, which performed “Fall On Me” by Andrea and Matteo Bocelli: “Did you give us more? I do not know. ”

Mandel’s middle streak, however, was ultimately broken by a few stellar performances.
Drum / dance group Divas & Drummers of Compton, led by pregnant captain Kehli Berry, brought a lot of energy while performing from their soccer field in Compton, California.
“I love the whole production and apparently I also love the reproduction,” Mandel joked. Klum added, “This was my favorite act of the night. “
Mandel made others scratch their heads when he gave comedian Alex Hooper a standing ovation, who individually roasted each judge and called Mandel “Mr. Clean ”.
“My problem is not with (Hooper). My problem is with (Mandel), ”Vergara said. “The whole night (Mandel’s) has been so negative and suddenly (Hooper) comes and destroys us and he claps?” (During his act, Hooper asked Vegara, “Who did your makeup? A drunk drag queen?”)
Mandel retorted, “This is what I was looking for. ”
Tuesday’s artists include Hooper (comedian); Bello Sisters (acrobatic trio); CA Wildcats (cheerleading group); Celina Graves (singer); Divas & Drummers of Compton (dance group); Dodds (singer); Lightwave Theater Company (puppeteers); Noah Epps (dancer); Resound (vocal trio); Broken Roots (singer duo) and Mandel’s Golden Buzzer winner Brandon Leake (spoken word poet).
Mandel was proud of his Golden Buzzer. Leake gave a “powerful” oral performance about his black mother’s fear of seeing him become “America’s next most popular hashtag” every time he leaves home amid protests against police brutality and the racism.
“You took an older white man and put yourself in the body of an African American mother hoping her son would survive life,” Mandel said. “In my heart you just won all night. ”
Fans can vote up to 10 times for each act on NBC.com/AGTvote, the “America’s Got Talent” app and via Xfinity Voice Remote. The proceedings of the semi-finals will be revealed during Wednesday’s results broadcast (NBC, 8 EDT / PDT).
