Hospital asks Saultites to call assessment center for COVID test

The Sault area hospital is seeing an increase in the number of people entering the emergency department looking for COVID-19 tests because they believe they have been exposed or to meet the demands of the workplace.”This trend is impacting our ability to provide regular care to our emergency room patients,” said a spokesperson for the hospital.

The only people who can access rapid internal tests are hospital admitted patients or internal patients, so testing through the hospital will not produce results any faster than the COVID-19 assessment center located on Drive-In Road.

“We are asking our community to please contact the assessment center at (705) 759-3434, ext. 7152 for testing for COVID-19 and not to come to the emergency room,” says the hospital.

The COVID-19 test is available at the center by appointment only, and the center is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week. No referral is required to get an appointment for a test, but patients will be pre-selected by telephone before obtaining an appointment.

As a result of making testing available for children aged 2 to 13 and other factors, the assessment center experienced a significant increase in volume resulting in its hours being extended by 20 hours at 10 p.m.

The assessment center is open to anyone two years of age or older who:

  • has no symptoms, but is concerned about having been exposed to COVID-19
  • has no symptoms but poses a risk of exposure to COVID-19
  • has symptoms compatible with COVID-19 (even mild)
  • does not meet the above criteria, but have been referred for testing by a health care agency such as 9-1-1, Telehealth, Algoma Public Health, their primary care provider or the occupational health We thank our community for their patience and cooperation.

If you need urgent medical attention, please go to the emergency department.
