Pinsent Masons’ research found that National Minimum Wage (NMW) surveys took place most often in Aberdeen, with 10.2 conducted per 100,000 population in 2019.Subsequently, Blackburn came in second (9.8), followed by Birmingham (9.6), Belfast (9.1) and Leicester (nine).

Overall, the number of NMW investigations increased to 3,561 last year, up from 2,807 in 2018/19.

Pinsent Mason detailed that HMRC typically uses its civil investigative powers to ensure workers are reimbursed what they are owed, but in some cases more extreme measures are needed.
