Gogglebox has sparked complaints with Ofcom, the media watchdog, after the Michael family lamented the blame placed on young people during the COVID-19 pandemic.
While watching a report on the government’s introduction of the “rule of six”, son Louis complained that young people should not be blamed for the current increase in cases.
Her sister added that it should be the most at-risk “small group of people” who should be isolating themselves at home, which has also drawn negative reactions from fans on social media.
Controversy: Gogglebox sparked complaints with media watchdog Ofcom after family Michael lamented blame placed on young people during COVID-19 pandemic
Gogglebox returned for its new series on Friday after a summer hiatus, with the Michaels’ discussion quickly turning to the ongoing pandemic.
Louis complained, “As long as they don’t go clubbing and bring 18 or 19 year olds back and bring them back to the halls, you’ll be fine.
“It seems crazy that they put all these programs like Eat Out To Help Out in place and basically try to get everyone back to normal, and now they’re blaming the kids. “
Drama: Family said young people should not be blamed for the increase in the number of cases and those most at risk should just ‘stay home’
Problems: Daughter Alex added: “But making everyone put their lives on hold is ridiculous”
Her sister Alex agreed, adding, “It just feels backward to me because if there is a small group of people who are at risk of dying, then it should be them self-isolated – not the large group of young people.
“And that should also be their choice, because if they are aware of the risks and the statistics, it should be their choice whether or not to isolate. But forcing everyone to put their lives on hold is ridiculous.
Viewers seemed to disagree, with some taking to Twitter to say that it would not be possible for many people to stay home because they could not work.
One wrote: “Seriously unimpressed with the Michael family’s take on #Gogglebox – generally so selfish of this generation. # COVID19 maybe even #COVIDIOTS. ‘ [sic]
Seriously? Viewers seemed to disagree, with some taking to Twitter to claim that it would not be possible for many people to stay home because they could not work.
A second added: “The Michael family. So selfish and ignorant. I’m just going to give up work and hide in a box. Happy now? ‘
“They should forbid them to talk about corona on the glasses box because the Michael family say why people should put their lives on hold to protect a few vulnerable people and the child in Essex who said ‘keep them old people “makes me angry endlessly,” tweeted a third.
Ofcom has now told The Sun it has received complaints about The Michael’s comments, with some calling them “insensitive” and “derogatory”.
It comes as cases of COVID-19 have seen a significant increase in recent weeks, raising fears of the introduction of more stringent lockdown measures.
MailOnline has reached out to representatives from Gogglebox and Ofcom for further comment.
Gogglebox airs Fridays at 9 p.m. on Channel 4.
