France tries to force change on Lebanese politicians


BEIRUT (AP) – French President Emmanuel Macron has taken a firm line following the massive explosion in the port of Beirut, setting deadlines for Lebanese politicians to carry out reforms. His practical approach angered some in Lebanon and won praise from others. But he underscored the Lebanese ‘deep frustration that their ruling class cannot effect the change on their own – especially because they are relying on the status quo to retain power and profit. Some people wonder if even external pressure can force them to reform.
