PARIS – French health authorities on Tuesday reported 8,051 new COVID-19 infections in the past 24 hours, up sharply from 4,070 on Monday, while intensive care admissions were also on the rise.
The number of people who died in France from COVID-19 infections rose from 85 to 31,893, compared to 81 on Monday. The cumulative number of cases now stands at 550,690.
On Tuesday, a total of 6,500 people were hospitalized with COVID-19 infection in France, 85 more in 24 hours. That included 1,204 patients in intensive care units, an increase of 40 since Monday.
The government recently stepped up measures to contain the resurgence of the virus and prevent a second nationwide lockdown.
France imposed one of the strictest lockdowns in Europe between March 17 and May 11 to prevent its hospital system from being overwhelmed.
