NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) – The French minister for Europe has said that the European Union should consider imposing sanctions against Turkey if the Turkish government does not suspend its search for energy reserves in the waters of the Eastern Mediterranean where Cyprus and Greece claim exclusive economic rights. French European Affairs Minister ClĂ©ment Baume said during a visit to Cyprus on Friday that sanctions should be among the options the EU plans to employ if Turkey continues to “endanger security and sovereignty of a Member State ‘. EU leaders are expected to hold a summit to discuss how to respond to Turkey’s refusal to recall a research vessel escorted by a warship it sent to a part of the eastern Mediterranean which the Commission says Greece, sits above its continental shelf.
