France bans the use of wild animals in circuses and marine parks

PARIS (AP) – The French Minister of the Environment has announced a gradual ban in the coming years on the use of wild animals in traveling circuses and the keeping of dolphins and killer whales in captivity in marine parks. Minister Barbara Pompili told a press conference on Tuesday that bears, tigers, lions, elephants and other wildlife would no longer be allowed in traveling circuses “in the years to come”. From now on, the three French marine parks will no longer be able to bring in or breed dolphins and killer whales. The measures would also end mink farming. The ban does not apply to wild animals in other permanent exhibitions and in zoos.
