The death occurred Thursday in the San Bernardino National Forest as crews battled the El Dorado fire, the U.S. Forest Service said in a press release.
The El Dorado fire broke out earlier this month over a smoke-generating pyrotechnic device used by a couple to reveal the gender of their baby, the Forestry and Fire Protection Department said. of California, or Cal Fire.
The name of the firefighter was not released until family members were notified. The cause of death was under investigation.
“Our deepest condolences go out to family, friends and fellow firefighters during this time,” spokesman Zach Behrens said in the statement.
The wildfire burned more than 19,000 acres (7,700 hectares) and was about 66 percent under control, according to Cal Fire.
Forest fires have burned more than 3 million acres in California this year and are responsible for at least 25 deaths.
