The government’s leading infectious disease physician on Wednesday accused Senator Rand Paul of repeatedly misinterpreting information about the US response to the coronavirus pandemic, including making misleading statements about herd immunity and effects of mitigation measures.
Testifying before the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Work and Pensions, Anthony Fauci rejected Paul’s claim that the United States’ mitigation and lockdown efforts were misguided. Paul cited the experiences of countries like Sweden that have not taken aggressive action to control the virus, arguing that “our death rate is essentially worse than Sweden’s.”
“If you look at the data, countries that have done very little have a lower death rate than the United States,” said Paul, a physician. “It is important that we the people do not simply consent to authoritarian mandates over our behavior without first asking the foster state to prove its hypothesis. “
