Edouard Mendy: Chelsea reach agreement with Rennes for Senegalese goalkeeper

Mendy has made 34 appearances for Rennes since joining the Reims club in August 2019

Chelsea have reached a deal with Rennes to sign goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.

The Senegalese international, 28, is wanted by manager Frank Lampard to increase competition with the club’s record of £ 71million signed Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Kepa was responsible for Liverpool’s second goal in the 2-0 Premier League loss Sunday, which has been described as “An obvious mistake” par lampard.

The Spain international was also abandoned last season after match errors.

This included the FA Cup final, where the 25-year-old was replaced by second-choice goalkeeper Willy Caballero, 38.

After the home loss to champions Liverpool, Lampard said Caballero would start the Carabao Cup match against Barnsley at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.

He added: “Kepa must continue to work and he must have support around him, it’s very clear.

“Individually, players need support, especially from myself, and I give it to all players. And now we have to try to give him confidence, because it is important. “

Last season for Rennes, Mendy kept nine clean sheets in 24 Ligue 1 appearances, against eight clean sheets for Kepa in 33 Premier League appearances.

Mendy’s save percentage was 76.3% and he conceded a goal every 114 minutes. Kepa’s save percentage was 53.5%, conceding a goal every 63 minutes.

However, Kepa’s pass accuracy was 79.7% compared to Mendy’s 70.1%.
