Donny van de Beek says he is “relieved” to finally end the uncertainty surrounding his future and has a “good feeling” after his first conversation with Manchester United head coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The 23-year-old midfielder became Solskjaer’s first signing from the summer transfer window earlier this week after the Red Devils struck a £ 40million deal with Ajax for his signing.

After undergoing a medical examination in his home country, Van de Beek entered as a second-half substitute on Friday night as the Netherlands took over Poland in the Nations League.

Tottenham’s Steven Bergwijn grabbed the headlines with the only goal of the game just past the hour in Amsterdam, but it was Van de Beek who faced the media shortly after the final whistle.

Asked about his move to Old Trafford this week, he admitted: “It was very complicated this week and quite exciting.

“Before the international period started to resume, the clubs were in talks. Then the clubs were out, but the medical still had to be done, and other things.

“At the end of the day, I’m very happy that he’s now ready and that we can play football again, because it’s quite complicated for a player. “

Van de Beek is confident Solskjaer understands the ‘qualities’ he can bring to United after speaking to the Norwegian for the first time this week.

“I am very relieved,” he continued.

“I received many congratulations and kind messages.

Many great Dutch players have of course played football at Manchester United and I have seen the team play on several occasions in the last season.

“I had a good conversation with the manager which gave me a good feeling.

“He knew very well what my qualities were and thinks that I can be an important player for the team, that I can give them something more. Hope this will work. ‘

Van de Beek took the No.34 shirt from United as a tribute to former Ajax team-mate and close friend Abdelhak Nouri, who was in a coma for nearly three years after collapsing in a friendly in 2017.

Regarding the meaning of the number, the Dutchman explained: “I’ve been thinking about it for a long time because it brings something emotional.

But it’s super nice: I love it for myself and the family is happy with it too.

“I hope I can celebrate many goals, assists and trophies with that number. ”
