Footage shows him sadly staring at the ground as people stroke his head and read the note that hung around his neck.
The piece of white cardboard has a large print: “Hello, my name is Chester. Please help me. My owner has passed away from Covid-19 and I have nowhere to go, don’t ignore me. “
Chester’s late owner had owned a stall at the market and the sign had been placed around the dog’s neck by other traders who knew he had been left alone, hoping it would help him find a new home for him with a passing customer.
Fortunately, Nataly Oblitas, manager of the animal shelter, worked at the market to sell accessories and animal feed for the rescue organization Huellitas Felices Peru – which means “Happy Little Footprints”.
Nataly said on social media that they welcomed Chester after speaking to traders at other market stalls, who confirmed the dog has been alone since its owner’s death.
He was immediately taken to the shelter, where his story and the heart-wrenching note led many on social media to ask him to give him a loving home.
Chester was taken to the vet for a checkup, where they discovered he was suffering from ehrlichiosis – a tick-borne disease that affected his vision – but treatment is already underway to help him.
Interest in Chester’s adoption grew online and within 24 hours he had already found an owner and moved into his new home.
