DIY SOS viewers in tears as Nick Knowles pays tribute to ‘wonderful’ star who died after episode aired

NICK Knowles paid tribute to a ‘wonderful’ DIY SOS star who passed away after his episode aired.

Fans of the show were left in tears after learning that severely disabled teenager, Ollie, whose home was transformed after his mother died and his father became paralyzed, had passed away.

In the summer of 2017, roofer Darren was left paralyzed and in a wheelchair when he developed Cauda Equina Syndrome – a serious condition where nerves all the way down to the spinal cord compress.

Sarah, Darren’s childhood sweetheart, died later that year on Boxing Day.

With Darren’s condition only getting worse, he had to deal with Ollie, who was born with hydrocephalus, also known as water on the brain.

Viewers re-watched the episode last night when it aired on rehearsal, and Nick took to Twitter to post a heartfelt tribute to Ollie, who died aged 18.

Nick, 57, shared a photo of Darren and Ollie, writing: ‘We @DIYSOS send our condolences to Darren and his family on the sad passing of the wonderful Ollie who is missing and was so loved,’ before viewers showed also a wave of sorrow

What is hydrocephalus?

Congenital hydrocephalus occurs when a baby is born with excess fluid in the brain.

It can be caused by an illness such as spina bifida or an infection the mother develops during pregnancy, such as mumps or rubella (German measles).

Many babies born with hydrocephalus have permanent brain damage.

This can lead to several long-term complications, such as:

  • Learning disabilities
  • Speech problems
  • Memory problems
  • Limited attention span
  • Problems with organizational skills
  • Vision problems, such as strabismus and loss of vision
  • Problems with physical coordination
  • Epilepsy

Hydrocephalus can usually be treated with a thin tube (shunt) surgically implanted in the brain and draining excess fluid.

Ollie’s positive reaction to Nick’s renovation on the house and garden was a highlight for viewers.

The crew even made space for Darren and Ollie to play a bit of wheelchair rugby.
