Democrats unveil $ 2.2 trillion coronavirus relief proposal

House Democrats unveiled a reduced $ 2.2 trillion coronavirus aid package on Monday evening in an attempt to revive long-running talks with the Trump administration over the measure. The package, $ 1.2 billion less than the version passed by the lower house in May, would include a second round of $ 1,200 checks to most Americans and bring home an jobless allowance of $ 600 per week.

Previous coronavirus relief packages have been negotiated between House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin.

Talks between the two for a new measure have never gained momentum, but House Democrats are hoping the latest proposal will bring White House negotiators back to the table.

“We’ve gone down $ 1 trillion, and it needs to go up because we need to crush this virus,” Pelosi said Monday on MSNBC.

“It takes money to crush the virus. It takes money to make schools safe. It takes money to put money in people’s pockets. ”

While their latest package has been drastically reduced, it’s still well above the $ 650 to $ 1 trillion range Senate Republicans are aiming for.

Monday’s proposal would send $ 436 billion to state and local governments, $ 225 billion to colleges and universities, and provide another round of grants to businesses under the Paycheck Protection Program.
