COVID NYC Update: Couple removed from ferry by police, issued summons after refusing to wear masks

NEW YORK CITY (WABC) – A couple were handcuffed and removed from a ferry by officers after refusing to wear face masks in Brooklyn on Saturday. Police said officers were called to Pier 6 in Brooklyn Bridge Park just after 10pm for a call from messy people. The captain of a New York ferry told them that a 53-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman refused to leave the ferry when told to get off so as not to wear masks.

The couple were taken into custody and convicted of disorderly conduct and violation of an emergency measure.

According to Gothamist, the couple refused to disembark after refusing the captain’s order to wear a mask.

According to Gothamist reporter Jake Offenhartz, the couple have claimed they have a constitutional right to ride without a mask because they both suffer from a medical condition that exempts them from the governor’s order.

The woman told Gothamist that they are suing the MTA for the criticism they received while riding maskless on a bus and now want to sue the ferry company as well.
